What is the yellow heart emoji on Snapchat?

If you're a frequent user of Snapchat, then you may have noticed a yellow heart emoji appear next to some of the names on your friends list.

They will always appear on the far right of each chat.

The emojis that appear next to your friends' names are actually called ''Friend Emojis''.

And, according to Snapchat they ''are a fun way to learn a little more about your friends".

The yellow heart is just one of many different Friend Emojis that the app uses.

What does the yellow heart mean?

The yellow heart emoji appears next to your number one best friend on Snapchat, when you are also their number one best friend.

This simply means that this is the person you exchange the most snaps with.

In the app's initial years, Snapchat also had a similar best friend feature.

However, instead of an emoji, your snapchat best friends were formed in a list, and they could be seen by all users.

In 2015, Snapchat bosses decided to remove this feature due to privacy concerns, and instead replaced it with the use of emojis.

Now, only you can see your best friends - so your privacy is protected.

What do the other emojis mean on Snapchat?

Aside from the yellow heart emoji, there are many more emojis that you may see appear next to some of the names on your friends list.

Each emoji holds a different meaning - and gives you an insight into your friendship with each user.

Here's what each emoji symbolises:

Baby face emoji

This Snapchat emoji will appear next to recently added friends.

You can expect to see this emoji pop up a lot if you're new to the app.

Red heart emoji

Just like the yellow heart emoji, the red heart symbolises you are No1 besties.

However, it differs from the yellow heart by indicating you have been friends for at least two weeks.

Pink heart emoji

You may suddenly see a red heart disappear from your friend's list and instead it is replaced with the pink heart emoji.

This simply means you've been Snapchat best friends for two months.

Fire emoji

A fire emoji symbolises a Snapstreak.

A Snapstreak is when you and a friend have snapped each other for at least three days in a row.

Next to the fire emoji, a number will appear - representing the number of days your Snapstreak has been active.

However, to earn a Snapstreak you must send a red snap to keep the flame burning - a blue chat will not count.

100 emoji

This emoji is one that is quite an achievement for any Snapchat user.

If you see the 100 emoji on your friend's list, it is because you've had a Snapstreak with this user for 100 days.

Now, that is some happy snapping.

Birthday cake emoji

With this emoji, the clue is in the name.

When signing up to Snapchat, the app requires each user to enter their birth date.

Therefore, when you see a birthday cake emoji appear next to one of your friends, it means that it's their birthday - so be sure to send a Happy Birthday message.

Sparkle emoji

The sparkle emoji may be shining on your friend's list - and here's why.

This gold emoji shows that you’re in a group with that particular user.

Hourglass emoji

Don't panic when you see the hourglass emoji appear next to your friend's names - this doesn't mean you have lost your Snapstreak.

However, what it does mean is that it's time to get snapping as your streak is about to come to an end.

By simply sending a red snap, the emoji will disappear and your Snapstreak will remain.

Smile emoji

The smiling face emoji shows that these users are some of your best and closest friends on the app.

When you frequently use the app and send a lot of snaps back and forth, this emoji will appear - and you may see it against quite a few of your friends' names.

However, this doesn't mean they are your number one best friend.

Grimace emoji

This emoji actually provides you with a little bit of an insight into your other pals' best friends list.

When the grimace emoji appears, this means your number one best friend is also the user's number one best friend.

This simply means you both interact a lot with the same person.

Sunglasses emoji

When the sunglasses emoji appears, this is because you and this user share a best friend.

But remember - this doesn't count for your number one best friend.

Pin emoji

Unlike the other Snapchat emojis, this one won't automatically appear.

Instead, you will see a pin emoji on your friends list when you pin your conversation with them.

This will automatically send this user to the top of your feed - making it easier to send snaps.
