Inside incredible HYPER STING supersonic nuclear-powered airliner that is TWICE as fast as Concorde at 2,600MPH

YOUR transatlantic flight from London to New York could take just 80 minutes if you climb aboard this incredible supersonic plane.

The concept aircraft is known as the Hyper Sting and is hoped to hit speeds of more than 2,600mph - twice as fast as the legendary Concorde.

The aircraft is also bigger - being 328ft long with a 168ft wingspan - and is hoped to be able to carry up to 170 passengers.

Passengers would sit in two rows of three - with a similar capacity to an Airbus A320, aircraft often used by easyJet and RyanAir.

With a sleek design focusing on comfort, it's hoped the plane would be able to fly across the world quietly, efficiently and at incredible speeds.

Hyper Sting would essentially end the idea of the long-haul flight - being able to complete the longest journeys in just a handful of hours.

The longest nonstop commercial flight in the world is currently the 9,537 mile trip from New York's JFK Airport to Singapore - clocking in at nearly 19 hours.

Flying at top speed, the Hyper Sting could do the journey in just three hours and 40 minutes.

It could also do other popular routes such as London to Beijing in just under two hours, or London to Perth in three and a half hours.

Hyper Sting would be powered to incredible speeds by two ramjet engines which would be fuelled by a small nuclear reactor.

And it would be powered by the theoretical technology of cold fusion.

The theoretical power source allows nuclear reactions at room temperature and produces huge amounts of electric power.

It is the latest project by Spanish designer Oscar Vinals who previously unveiled planes for supersize aircraft the Sky Whale and Big Bird.

But with this idea he is scaling down his ambitions, but hopes the concept could help bring back the age of ultra speed travel.

There has not been a commercial supersonic airliner since the last Concorde was retired in 2003 after 27 years in service.

Concorde was a revolutionary British and French design - but was ultimately killed off by the high cost tickets, low passenger numbers, noise and safety concerns.

A new era of supersonic flight might be just around the corner

Ever since lots of designers have speculated about a return of supersonic mass transit - but no one has yet taken the plunge.

Oscar hopes his concept for the Hyper Sting will help solve some of the problems with supersonic travel - while also being bigger and faster than Concorde.

"Concorde was a brilliant piece of machinery, a noble experiment, but it put too much emissions in the environment, too much noise into our communities,  and was too expensive to operate," he told The Sun Online.

"A new era of supersonic flight might be just around the corner, but there are challenges to overcome when it comes to flying faster than the speed of sound.

"The 'Hyper Sting' is a new concept about of future supersonic commercial airplanes."

Oscar gave the concept plane its name due to the extremely long sting-like nose cone - known as the "Active Airflow Booster Nose".

Working with the unique "trident" design of the wings, the nose would be covered with thrusters to help mitigate the sound of sonic booms.

The "sting" would control the pressure and speed of the airflow to reduce the sound of the rumbling booms that accompanied Concorde.

Oscar hopes the unique wing shape could pivot to allow low speed take offs and landings on short runways.

And the aircraft would be covered with solar cells to help run the plane's systems - including an artificial intelligence (AI) to assist the pilots.

The plane would also have laser guidance systems for takeoff and landing.

It would be made off low-weight materials to further help improve the plane's efficiency and keep costs down for passengers.

Oscar said: "The 'Hyper Sting' concept has the objective  to become, in some ways, different to other future concepts, due to incorporation of innovative solutions.

"Like a new fuselage geometry (central body) with active variable geometry wings, a new concept system to reduce the sonic boom, a new system to create energy for the airplane, a new concept of engines, a new aerodynamic devices, capable to generate for itself energy and also a new guidance system."
