Forza Horizon 3: I sat down with creators Playground Games to talk VR, DLC, expansions and where they lie in the British developers scene

I sat down with Ralph Fulton, their Creative Director, to chat just about everything Forza

IF MY visit to Playground Studios – the creators of Forza Horizon 3 – told me anything, it was that we’ll have a VR version of the hit driving game within the next year.

I sat down with Ralph Fulton, their Creative Director, to chat about everything, including virtual reality, DLC and where his studio sits in the British games developer scene.

Talking over their 5/5-rated game, and the future, he said: “We’ve got Oculus Rift and HTC Vive around the studio for our staff to use.

“We enjoy using that and we are quite excited about the future for that, but we’ve got nothing to talk about right now.”

Not an announcement, granted, but an indicator that Playground has virtual reality in their sights in the very near future.

Forza Horizon 3 was released last week to critical acclaim, and we also talked about its post-launch content and new weekly Forzathon event.

Fulton added: “We’ve got some great stuff lined up for Forzathon. It will happen every week, at a non specific time.

“When it’s open you have challenges and when you complete them you will gain rewards such as credits, cars or even novelty horn packs.

“We’ll also do monthly car DLC, which is very popular and our players really value it an enormous amount.

“We will also do expansions. We do cool twists on the main Horizon experience.”

And Fulton also discussed where Playground believe they are in the British games development scene.

He said: “We’ve been going for six-and-a-half years now. When we set Playground up, it was in the middle of a recession.

“A lot of people said ‘are you nuts?’. We believed then, like we do now, that if you have amazing people then you can find success that way.

“What we have done over the years is find even more amazing people. The strength of this studio is in the people we have hired.

“It’s a fantastic team and has grown over the three games we have made. We’re an independent studio, and we love that independence.

“We love where we are right now.”
