This is because cyber con artists often try to get into people's WhatsApp accounts remotely with a single verification code as it stands at the moment.

They contact you, pretending to be someone official and in need of the code.

Once they've got it, they can log into your account and pretend to be you when messaging friends and family, which is where the real danger sets in.

Instead, WhatsApp wants to add an additional verification code that's separate from the first one you receive via text message when trying to login from a new device for the first time.

So if you get a second code from WhatsApp, it should act as a massive red flag that someone is trying to hack your account and you should not share that code with anyone.

The beefed up security isn't available just yet, it's still being developed.
