The device, which allows players to enter immersive, virtual worlds, was playable for the first time at a Sony showcase at GDC in San Francisco.

Attendees heaped praise on the device on social media, with one tester calling it "soooo good".

The plaudits were led by Chet Faliszek, a former Valve worker who is now CEO of U.S. game studio StrayBombay.

He tweeted on Thursday: "Had one of those VR moments today playing in the new PSVR2 hmd.

Sony confirmed in February 2021 that it is working on a new version of its PlayStation VR headset designed for the PlayStation 5.

The Japanese tech titan said that the new gear, out later this year, promises "dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity".

Sony's original PSVR system hit shelves four years ago and is now the best-selling high-end VR headset ever.

The wearable gear, which also plugs into the PS5, lets players immerse themselves in virtual reality games processed through their console.

Starting at £260, players can bolster their set-up by paying for extra gear in the form of special VR controllers, which ship for £70 for a pair.

The PSVR2 will boast an OLED display with a 2000 x 2040 pixel resolution per eye, as well as a 120Hz refresh rate.

That should bring the technology up to speed with the graphical prowess of the PS5, Sony's next-gen console.
