Apple iOS 10 release day is here

The release follows the iPhone 7's big reveal

APPLE has revealed the new iPhone 7 - but if you're not due an upgrade just yet, you don't have to completely miss out.

For those of us with older phones, new software update iOS 10 is coming out tonight. Here's everything you need to know about the new update.

Luckily for us, iOS 10 comes out at a very reasonable 6pm - which is 10am on the USA's West Coast, so the start of the working day for employees at Apple's California headquarters.

Unfortunately for Apple fanatics in Australia, the update is released at 3 o'clock tomorrow morning - so many will have to wait a little bit longer for the new software.

What is iOS 10?

iOS 10 will work on the iPhone 5 and all later models, as well as from  the 4th generation iPad onwards. The software will also work on the iPad Mini 2.

It comes with a whole host of new features, including more detailed homepage notifications, improvements to Siri, photo facial recognition and even capacity to control smart gadgets and home appliances remotely from your phone.

People are also excited about the prospect of new emojis - which will now be three times bigger.

There's also the introduction of 'rich links' to look forward to - which mean if you send a webpage or YouTube link in iMessage, the recipient will see a preview of the shared content.

How do you download iOS10?

Downloading the new software couldn't be simpler - when it's available, you'll get a notification on your phone.

Then, it's recommended that you back up your data, just in case anything goes wrong. You can back it up to iCloud using Settings > iCloud > Backup, or you can plug your phone into your computer and press 'Back Up Now' on iTunes.

If you don't have enough space on your phone for the update and can't bring yourself to delete anything, plugging your phone into the computer and downloading software using iTunes can solve the issue.
