World’s BEST iPhone photos taken using ‘night mode’ revealed by Apple
APPLE has revealed the very best photos take using the iPhone's Night Mode.
The revolutionary feature lets you snap stunning images in the dark – and is only available on the latest iPhone models.
Smartphone photographers around the world answered Apple's call to participate in the challenge.
The prize is being featured in a gallery on Apple's official website and the firm's Instagram page.
Better still, the images are set to appear globally on billboards – showcasing the power of your iPhone's camera to the world.
Winning photographs were selected by a panel of judges, including top photographers and Apple exec Phil Schiller.
Six super-snaps were ultimately selected as winners, representing Russia, India, Spain and China.
The idea behind the challenge was to show off the iPhone's Night Mode feature.
Night Mode lets you take photos in the dark without using flash by having an AI automatically brighten your snaps for you.
It can even add a touch of light to snaps you've already taken, allowing you to effectively "see in the dark".
Apple says that feature works automatically whenever the phone senses dim lighting conditions.
"We determine the image fusion time and use adaptive bracketing based on what we see in preview," said Apple exec Kaiann Drance, speaking last year.
"So, shorter frames if you have subject motion or longer frames if you have deep shadows.
"Then we intelligently fuse images together, reducing motion and blur."
The feature is available on the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Those three handsets were launched last year, and are the newest Apple mobiles available right now.
iPhone tricks to try today
Here are some of the best...
- Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, letting you move around words and sentences more easily
- Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapped squares in the bottom right-hand corner, and press close all tabs
- Delete lots of photos quickly – Hold down on a photo and then drag your finger diagonally in Photos to select lots of images at once, then hit delete
- Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of your Home screen (or swipe left to right on an iPhone X), then tap in the bar and type a currency (like $200) and it will automatically covert to your local currency
- Check if you're due a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and check out the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally a battery is considered worn when you're down to 80% capacity. If you're below, you can buy a battery swap from Apple
- Move apps around faster – Hold an app until it starts wiggling, then (while still holding) tap other apps, causing them to stack so you can move them around easier
One of the winning photos was snapped by Russian photographer Konstantin Chalabov using an iPhone 11 Pro.
He pictured a snowy nighttime scene with a glowing vehicle just off-centre.
Phil Schiller says: “Konstantin’s photo is a super-dramatic image shot with Night mode," said Apple's Phil Schiller.
"It could be the opening shot of a great Cold War spy movie.
"It challenges us with intriguing questions — ‘Where is the driver? Where are they going? Why stop out here?’
"A cool mist permeates the blue Russian hillside and snow-covered ground, framing the lonely vehicle with bright red lights that hint at an unknown danger."
