EE now has 5G in over 50 places as six new cities added – here’s the full list
EE has rolled out 5G mobile internet to nine more cities and towns across the UK, bringing the super-fast network to a total of 50 locations.
The network's 5G is now available in Hull, Leeds, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Sunderland, Northampton, Stevenage and Wakefield.
EE has also boosted its 5G coverage in some of the busiest locations including London's Euston station.
The mobile company is aiming to have it's 5G in 70 locations by March 2020.
EE, which is now part of BT, is planning to launch more of its network around the same time that some highly anticipated 5G devices should be coming out.
This includes the iPhone 12.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said: “We switched on the UK’s first 5G network in May, and this is another milestone towards keeping our customers connected 100% of the time.
"We’re leading the way in the UK, with 4G and 5G coverage in more places than any other operator.
"Adding 5G to more cities and towns – and expanding our 5G coverage in each place – is helping us to always deliver the best mobile experience to our customers.”
5G is the next generation of mobile phone networks.
Just like 4G made your mobile internet faster and more reliable compared to 3G, 5G will do the same again.
Phone networks across the UK are currently scrambling to introduce 5G phone speeds for Brits.
Typical 4G speeds today will typically fall between 50Mbps and 100Mbps. But early 5G speeds will raise this bar to several hundred megabits-per-second.
And once 5G networks are advanced, you’ll expect to enjoy gigabit-per-second speeds.
However, you’ll need to upgrade your phone plan to a 5G tariff.
Also, not all smartphones support 5G internet – they’ll need to have a 5G-ready modem inside.
We’re only now starting to see 5G smartphones in 2019, so older phones won’t support the new speeds.
Many top phone makers have committed to making (or already launched) 5G-ready smartphones.
These include Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus, LG and Oppo.
EE isn't alone in its fairly large 5G offering.
Vodafone 5G is now available in 30 UK towns and cities and its 5G roaming is available in Italy, Germany and Spain.
What is 5G?
Here's what you need to know...
- The term 5G stands for 5th-generation, and is simply the next "version" of mobile phone networks.
- The world's network operators have settled on a new method of delivering mobile internet to your phone, making it possible to offer far higher download speeds.
- Early figures suggest you'll be able to download 4K movies in a matter of seconds, and buffering video will be a thing of the past.
- But 5G also promises low "latency" – the physical delay in transmitting data – which is a major boon for gamers, who desperately need their online actions to be sent and received as quickly as possible.
- EE was first across the line in the UK, with 5G live in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham or Manchester – and now many more areas too
- Vodafone has also switched on 5G in seven cities: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, and London
