Google Year in Search 2019 results reveal Brits cared more about rugby and Game of Thrones than the General Election

BRITS cared more about the Rugby World Cup than anything else this year, according to Google’s top searches.

Game of Thrones and Marvel villain Thanos also feature on the US tech titan’s Year in Search 2019 list, which reveals what the world has been typing into their browsers.

Released early Wednesday morning, the UK’s top searches in 2019 were dominated by international sport.

The Rugby World Cup, which saw England reach the final in impressive style only to be beaten at the last hurdle by South Africa, topped this year’s list of Brits’ searches, Google revealed.

It was the only trend to best the Cricket World Cup, which came second after England’s nail-biting “Super Over” versus New Zealand in the final.

The past 12 months have been huge for TV dramas, with the controversial final season of Game of Thrones taking third spot in the UK’s top trends.

Caitlyn Jenner was this year’s most search for celebrity after her appearance on I’m a Celeb

HBO’s highly acclaimed historical drama series, Chernobyl, came in fourth overall, while British reality shows littered the list of the UK’s top telly picks.

TV stalwarts Love Island and I’m a Celebrity placed third and fifth in the top-trending TV shows for 2019.

BBC series’ Line of Duty, His Dark Materials, Luther and Killing Eve also claimed top 10 places this year.

Elsewhere, the UK’s top trending celebrity was Olympic gold medal–winning decathlete, reality superstar and I’m A Celebrity contestant, Caitlyn Jenner.

The fire at Notre Dame was a popular search trend this year

She beat out Boris Johnson (fifth), Love Island finalist Tommy Fury (fourth) and even scandal-ridden royal Prince Andrew (third) to top spot.

The fire at Notre Dame and the release of the iPhone 11 topped the UK’s trending news events, while Marvel smash hit Avengers: Endgame was the nation’s most searched movie.

In a somewhat interesting – or perhaps depressing – twist, this week’s general election didn’t feature in any UK top trending list.

Kirstin Wright, a Google Trends expert said: “The 2019 Year in Search lists not only reveal the most popular trends from the past 12 months, but also give insight into the biggest events in the news, politics, sports, entertainment and even the latest lingo.

“As people continue to look for information in new and different ways, Google Search keeps evolving to make the world’s information accessible and useful to all.”
