It appears the willies had the desired effect as the potholes have now been repaired in Middlesbrough.

Local resident Brad Nicholson posted a photo of the graffiti on Facebook page, saying: "The power of the willy. Repaired this morning 25-04-2019. Only been there a year, well done Middlesbrough Council."

Residents have praised the cheeky street art, with one Facebook user saying: "There's gonna be a penis on every pothole now."

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: "Middlesbrough, like all local authority areas in the country, has issues with potholes and repairs are carried out on a priority basis determined by the risk they pose to highway users.

It's not the first time the unorthodox method has been used to improve local roads.

A mystery spray-painter circled several dangerous potholes across Manchester with the graphic tag in 2015.

The anonymous artist was dubbed "W**ksy" after well-known street artist Banksy.
