GRAB A BITE

Scientists create ‘venomous’ chilli sauce to mimic spider bite that ’causes muscle spasms and burning pain’

You can now try Scientific Steve's Venom Chilli Sauce for £6.50 and it's designed to give you the same feeling as a bite from the Trinidad Chevron tarantula

SCIENTISTS have created a chilli sauce that mimics the bite of a venomous spider - and you can pick up a bottle for just £6.50.

The Trinidad Chevron tarantula's fangs leave victims with 'muscle spasms and burning pain' - and 'Scientific Steve's Venom Chilli Sauce' is designed to have the same effect.

Experts at Kent-based research firm were forced to use synthetic poison as killjoys in the Food Standards Agency killjoys wouldn't let them use the real thing.

Managing director and founder Steven Trim, 41, said: "It's as best as we can manage without actually tasting the venom.

"It's a similar heat component that the venom would cause.

Nobody has been foolish enough to try the venom

"We focus on studying venoms and how they work in the biology for drug discovery and through this research we became aware that the Trinidad Chevron venom actually works on the same receptors as Capsicum."

The idea first came to him when he ran into food manufacturer Stefano Cuomo at a conference.

Steven added: "It was about two years ago when we had that first light bulb moment.

"I laughed it off at the time and said it was hilarious to do. Nobody has been foolish enough to try the venom.

"But we kept bringing it up when we bumped into each other over the year. We finally hit on the idea of doing a synthetic inspired sauce."

They were forced to synthesise the poison as the FSA ordered them to blow £20,000 on testing to make sure the venom was safe for consumption.

You can buy a bottle of the sauce - although we're not really sure why you'd want to.
