It’s a new year, a time for adventure and trying out things that you haven’t done before.

It’s not always possible to be spontaneous, and in Britain the weather can dampen certain plans.

However, Sun Bingo has put together a list of weekend activities that suit both wet weather and glorious sunshine.

Most of the suggestions could be done as soon as the very next day.

Got a weekend with little planned? Not sure what to do in the grey January weather?

Weekend plan ideas

One of the hardest things about being spontaneous in the UK is the weather!

Fortunately, all of the plans on this list can still be enjoyed in the wind and rain.

  • Museum visit – lots of museum have free or reduced entry costs. While it may be possible to simply turn up, it’s worth checking whether advanced booking is advised.
  • National trust site – some of the sites are based outdoors, so it would have to be an indoor venue if the weather isn’t looking good. Most sites recommend pre-booking.
  • Movie day – the perfect wet weather activity! Pick the films you love, you’ve been meaning to watch or have just dropped on your chosen streaming site.

  • Dinner out – pick a new place or make sure to order a new dish at your favourite spot.
  • Spa day – it might be difficult to book into a spa last minute. If you can’t then why not recreate the day at home! You could paint your nails, buy a facemask or take a long, hot bubble bath.
  • Be a tourist – what’s the local tourist attraction? Make sure to actually visit it. It’s easy to forget to be a tourist in your own local area, but that means you could miss out on something great.
  • Go swimming – check out your local leisure centre or swimming club. When the weather gets better, this could be cold water swimming or a dip in the sea.

WE'VE GOT YOUR FEEL GOOD FRIDAY STRETCHES SORTED

  • Get reading – start that book that you’ve been meaning to read for ages!
  • Get writing – ever fancied writing a book? It’s never too late, and the best time to start is now. You might talk yourself out of it if you overthink it, so a spontaneous writing session could be the answer. Try something like journaling to ease yourself into writing.
  • Check out local events – there’s usually at least something going on in your local area that you might not know about so miss out on. Investigate what the local weekend events are and go along.
  • Sign up to be a volunteer – some volunteering opportunities might need more advanced notice. However, volunteering at events such as park runs might be able to be organised with relatively little notice.

  • Connect with friends and family – it could be as simple as picking up the phone, sending a message or arranging a coffee. Make sure to make time for the people that matter. Rather than spending the weekend doing little, you could reconnect with those you love.

  • Print out photos – go through your 2023 photos, pick your favourite ones and print them out! You could frame them or simply pin them up around your home.
  • Arts and crafts – whether it’s a new hobby or getting back into an old favourite, wet weather creates a great chance for some quality craft time.
  • Wander round a garden centre – this is another wet weather staple. Explore the world of plants with potential extras like gift items, a soft play or a nice café. If the weather is good, you could spend the rest of the day planting the newest additions to your garden.

WHAT'S YOUR PICK N MIX FLAVOUR?

  • Dinner party or drinks tasting – it might sound like it needs a lot of work and can’t be spontaneous, but that’s not necessarily true. Once you have the guest list sorted, a trip to the big supermarket can provide you with everything you need! You could also use this as a chance to cook an adventurous dish.
  • Join a class – even if the class isn’t at the weekend, be spontaneous and sign up for learning or trying something out of your comfort zone.
  • Do something dramatic with your hair – this could mean finding a last minute appointment or a DIY job at home. Try a new style, cut or even colour.
  • Rearrange your house – remember rearranging your bedroom as a child and that feeling of satisfaction? Try it out as an adult and see how different your rooms can feel simply by moving the furniture around.

WHAT CAN YOU BUY FOR A PENNY? HOW ABOUT SOME PENNY BINGO!

  • Do a clear out – this goes hand in hand with rearranging your home. As you go, have a clear out at the same time. It’s not necessarily a job you look forward to so best to spring it on yourself at the last minute. It’s also a great use of a rainy weekend. The items you decide that you don’t want could be sold or donated to a worthy cause.
  • Get a piercing or tattoo – while not necessarily something you should do without thinking through, the idea of a tattoo or piercing might have been on your mind for a while. This Friday is the time to make the appointment!
  • Social media blackout – have a technology-free day. No need to see how everyone else is spending their weekend, try to focus on enjoying your day instead.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT BINGO ROOM FOR YOU

  • Go to a farmer’s market or craft fair – it’s nicer to go to these sort of events in the good weather, but they are usually well adapted for the bad weather by having the stalls under covers.
  • Platform roulette – a spontaneous weekend away is the dream! However, that’s not always possible. This is a way of having a spur of the moment adventure that is more accessible. Go to a major station and randomly pick a platform. Check out where the next train is going and buy tickets for that destination. It’s a chance to explore somewhere new that you might not have discovered otherwise.
  • Sign up to Sun Bingo – we might be biased but spending a weekend, particularly a bad weather weekend, playing bingo sounds like a great idea!
