The diamond was gifted to Edward VII, who wanted the diamond split into multiple gems.

It took four days to prepare the cleaving knife and the jeweller was said to have fainted from nervous exhaustion when the Cullinan final cracked.

Nine major stones were formed and named Cullinan I – Cullinan IX.

A further 96 minor brilliants and unpolished fragments were also produced.

Two of the Cullinan diamonds will make an appearance at the coronation of King Charles III.

The Cullinan I is 530 carats and was set in the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross.

The Cullinan II is 317 carats and was set in the Imperial State Crown.

King Charles III will wear this crown as he leaves Westminster Abbey.

It is also used on other State occasions, such as the annual State Opening of Parliament.

Diamond engagement rings  

The first recorded use of a diamond engagement ring was in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring.
