All things sunny

Is Sun Bingo right about whether these characters are heroes or villains?

AT Sun Bingo, we’re obsessed with all things sunny! So, we love it when fictional characters are given sunny names.

However, just because someone has a sunny name, it doesn’t mean they have a sunny disposition.

We’ve rounded up four characters with sunshine-filled names and decided whether they are actually heroes or villains.

Sonny LaTierri from Grease

As the popular nickname “Sonny” is pronounced “sunny”, we’ll allow it be appear on this list.

Sonny LaTierri is a member of the T-birds; a wise-cracking chap that’s definitely one of the villains of this film.

This is evident from a few instances where his actions have derailed or outright damaged the other budding romances.

During the dance contest scene, it’s a drunken Sonny who pulls Sandy away from Danny in the hand jive, which allows Cha Cha to swoop in and start dancing with him.

That’s why Sandy leaves the dance crying.

Sonny also stirs the pot at the drive-in cinema as he’s the one to spread the word that Rizzo thinks she’s pregnant.

Little Miss Sunshine from Mr Men

She’s a round, yellow, smiling circle of happiness. With cute little plaits and freckles, this Mr Men character could never be anything but a hero.

The Mr Men website describes her as “Always look on the bright side of life! No one could be happier than Little Miss Sunshine, the world’s golden girl”.

One of her favourite pastimes is smiling – it doesn’t get more wholesome than that.

She’s also an independent spirit; she’s got a purple car and drives herself around.

This Little Miss single-handedly saves Miseryland and turns it into Laughterland.

All in a day’s work for a hero.

Sonny Corleone from The Godfather

Whether Sonny Corleone is a hero or villain isn’t as obvious. Sonny is devoted to his family and fiercely loyal to the family business.

However, as Acting Don, he orders and carries out extreme acts of violence and other illegal activities.

In the film, the viewers are supposed to root for the Corleones. So, that would make Sonny a hero.

He seems to die a hero’s death, trying to protect his sister.

However, does that forgive the major criminal power he wields as the leader of a Mafia family?

Sun Bingo doesn’t think so.

Therefore, Sonny Corleone is a villain.

Summer Finn from 500 Days of Summer

As summer is the season of sunny weather, we decided to allow this entry.

Summer Finn is another tricky case. Tom is usually seen as the hopeless romantic that’s just trying to woo the girl he loves, and Summer is cruel for not returning his feelings.

However, both actors (Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel) have vocalised support for the theory that Tom is actually the film’s villain and Summer is the hero.

They argue that Summer was just being true to herself; Tom had an idealised version of her in his mind that stopped him from appreciating the real Summer.

As heroes stay true to themselves, Sun Bingo has decided that Summer is a hero.

What do you think?
