Actor Ben Welford is our Shower Man.

He recently sat down with Sun Bingo to talk about the man behind the shower curtain: his go-to shower songs, memories of unusual bingo prizes and an unfortunate incident with a pick-up truck…

Meet Ben Welford!

Ben Welford – Shower Man

What’s your current / go to shower song?

I would say Crocodile Rock by Elton John. But, in a close second, Pencil Full of Lead by Paolo Nutini. It’s a great song, a great album. It’s got a lot of trumpet in it and it’s a great wake up in the morning.

Pencil Full of Lead isn’t an 80s song, but anything that’s got that 70s / 80s vibe, like 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton. That’s a shower song, there’s literally a lyric about it.

MEET LISA PEACE - SUN BINGO'S SUNBATHER WOMAN

I do have an album that I generally play in the shower. It includes Jump (For My Love) by The Pointer Sisters, Gold by Spandau Ballet, Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves, You’ll Be Back from Hamilton the Musical

The list goes on! I take my job as Shower Man very seriously.

Would you pick showers or baths if you could only have one?

Showers are quick, you get the job done. However, it does depend on if the shower head has a change of settings – is it softer, harder, massage mode…

You know if you’ve got a real sore spot of a muscle in your shoulder, you can click on massage mode and it’ll blast the water out so you can focus it on that point.

It’s like a sustained pressure. It’s good because you obviously can’t take electrical massage equipment in the shower, can you.

DO YOU KNOW THE RULES OF ONLINE BINGO AND HOW LONG GAMES SHOULD LAST?

A bath is nice, but it’s a treat. I’ll have a bath occasionally, I’m not a savage…

I love a bath bomb, but the minor issue with them is when you forget you’ve had a bath bomb, you let the water out, you walk away, you come back and your bath is stained the colour of the bath bomb.

Or, the bath bomb is glittery, and the glitter goes EVERYWHERE.

Do you enjoy bingo and slot games? Do you have experience playing them?

I’m from the North East, and I have very vivid memories of going to the bingo hall / community centre with my nana.

She was babysitting us but still wanted to go to bingo. I was put on a seat and given a fake pad and dabber (obviously wasn’t really playing, but I wanted to feel like I was taking part).

PLAYING THE DUO BINGO FEATURE IMPROVES YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING A PRIZE

I have memories of my nana getting a line or full house and the winnings would be a tray of eggs.

Actual eggs, you know like “how do you like your eggs in the morning?”, guess I like mine from bingo!

There was a lot of people there, enjoying it. It was an activity for the community to do. Some were treating it like a serious sport!

What brings you luck in life?

I love the number six. I was born on the sixth. I normally play defence in football as number six. I love the number six, it’s a great number.

I’ll fight anyone on that.

I do like to think that I make my own luck though… I find it really interesting when footballers have rituals that they’ve got to do.

WHAT'S THE BEST ONLINE BINGO SITE? HERE'S HOW TO TELL!

There’s a difference between luck and superstition though… I broke a mirror once, I think I was 14.

The minute I did it, I did the maths and reckoned by 21 I should be fine.

You know what, from 21 onwards, that’s when I’ve done most of my acting. I got into drama school later on…

So, I have broken a mirror, but I’m still here! I just don’t think people like breaking mirrors, they’re an expensive item.

I do salute magpies, but that’s because I’m a Newcastle fan.

What’s something about yourself that not many people know?

I was, accidentally, run over by my dad once. He didn’t mean it!

We have horses at home, so he had a pick-up truck – it’s the easiest way to transport the hay or water if you need to.

We’d gone to feed and water the horses. I was on the back of the pick-up truck.

PLAY OUR DAILY SPIN-GO WHEEL AND YOU COULD WIN A HOLIDAY

He let the dog out of the car to have a run, and started driving away. My dad stops before we get onto proper roads, opens the door and shouts “Come on”.

He was talking to the dog. I thought he was talking to me. I got off the back of the truck and my dad starts to drive away, and I panic… I ran to catch up… I went under the wheel… It wasn’t really bad.

I was walking the next day… but I was taken to hospital. There were X-rays.

I remember feeling like my legs were my arms and my arms were my legs.

Getting run over by your dad is weird, but it’s a great story to tell!
