Cool to be kind

RAK Day: how it started, what it’s about and how Sun Bingo is being kind

In a world where you can be anything, be kind – especially tomorrow as it’s Random Acts of Kindness Day.

The concept was started by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation in 1995 in Denver, Colorado.

However, since then, the idea has spread and many countries have picked up the date as a day for caring for others.

Be kind – it’s good for you

It’s not just a good moral habit, but actually random acts of kindness have also been shown to have positive health benefits.

One act of kindness a day could help to reduce stressanxiety and depression.

Studies suggest that when we are kind to others, we get a rush of feel-good hormones, this effect is known as the ‘helper’s high’.

This includes:

  • Serotonin – the body’s feel-good chemical that helps to heal wounds.
  • Endorphins – these increase feelings of pleasure and reduce feelings of pain.
  • Dopamine – a chemical messenger in the brain that plays a vital role in functions such as sleep and attention span.
  • Oxytocin – this hormone is associated with helping us to form social bonds and feelings of trust. Some studies suggest it may even aid in reducing blood pressure.

Acts of kindness inspiration

Your random act of kindness doesn’t have to be big or expensive.

The little things can also go a long way to helping someone:

  • Check on any elderly / lonely neighbours and friends – a five minute chat or quick run to the shops for someone unable to go themselves could make a huge difference to their day.
  • Give to charity – putting your loose change in a charity box at a till, buy from a charity shop or sponsor someone who is doing an event for a charity.
  • Compliments – just a few kind words can hold the power to brighten someone’s day.
  • Let someone queue-jump – whether in a car, coffee shop or supermarket, letting someone else go ahead of you might be the five-minute time saver that they really needed.
