Wimbledon 2019: Serena Williams survives massive scare to battle past Kaja Juvan in three sets

WIMBLEDON queen Serena Williams gave close friend Meghan Markle a royal display as she moved into the third round.

The American was watched by the Duchess of Sussex as she came from behind to beat Kaja Juvan from Slovenia 2-6 6-2 6-3 on No1 Court.

Markle, 37, took time out from baby duties at the Palace to enjoy a day out at the tennis with some pals.

And it was no surprise she decided to watch her fellow countrywoman live in action given their close connection.

There were concerns that Williams, searching for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam crown, was heading out of the ladies singles at an early stage.

Juvan won the first set convincingly and gave the 37-year-old a wake-up call that she might be heading out if she did not raise her game.

Yet the tennis superstar took control of the second set and then asserted her dominance and class in the third set to book her spot in the last-32.

Williams will now take on German Julia Gorges in the next round but tougher challenges with world No1 Ash Barty a possible opponent in the quarter-final.

Barty will first face British star Harriet Dart, after the 22-year-old beat Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets on Court 12.

The world No182 had never won a tour match before Wimbledon, but now has a third round date with the top-seeded Australian.
