Murray will face Tennys Sandgren of USA in the opening round

Murray has not played since his quarter-final exit at SW19, where he lost his number one title to Nadal.

Should the 30-year-old beat Sandgren, he will be scheduled to meet Argentinian Diego Schwartzman in round three, with the likes of David Ferrer, Lucas Pouille and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga waiting in the wings.

Sandgren is ranked 104 who only made his grand slam debut at the French Open this year, where he lost in the first round.

Nadal and Roger Federer are both on the other side of the draw, so they will not be able to meet Murray until the final.

Federer and Nadal have never faced each other at Flushing Meadows.

The men’s tour is laced with injuries to high-profile players with Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic all absent.
