COMATOSED
Mischa Zverev says he was ‘in a coma’ while playing the game of life to send Andy Murray crashing out of Australian Open
Mischa Zverev pulls off wonder win and says: 'I don’t know how I made certain points, but I just got there in the end'
NOT only could astonished journeyman Mischa Zverev scarcely believe he had turfed Andy Murray out of the Australian Open - he reckoned he did it while in a coma!
The German outsider won 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to stun the world of tennis and insisted: “Honestly, I don’t know how I did it.
"I was in a coma, just serving and volleying my way through it. I don’t know how I made certain points, but I just got there in the end.
“I got excited the longer it went, not nervous. How can you not stay focused and aggressive with this crowd making all this noise, but it’s hard to stay calm.
"Even when I missed a really easy smash in the fourth set, I looked at my mum and she just smiled. She always does. That really helped me.
“This means the world to me and it also does that all my family are here to see it. I saw Sacha [his brother] lose so closely in an incredible match yesterday, but it definitely inspired me. He always does.
“Now I’m the first of us to make the quarters of a Grand Slam, but he’s still ranked above me, so he still gets to walk through the door first.
“I don’t know how I feel yet about playing in the last eight, but if it’s Roger Federer then that’s a dream, because as I grew up he was always my favourite player.”
A distraught Murray slunk away with barely a wave, saying: "I’m disappointed but I also had best seven months of my life on tennis court so I have to put it into context and see how good the last few months have been.
"Obviously I'm disappointed to lose but I've come through some matches in that period I shouldn't have won.
"On paper today was a match I should have won. I had opportunities to win but Mischa came up with great stuff when he needed to.
"I would have liked to have gone further but I'll come back from it, learn from it and hopefully it doesn't happen again."
