Serena Williams donates Auckland Open winner’s prize money to Australian fire fund after first win since becoming mum

SERENA WILLIAMS is in prime position to launch an assault on Grand Slam No.24 tilt after winning a first trophy as a mum.

The world No.10 beat fellow Yank Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-4 in the final and celebrated with her daughter Olympia.

It’s her 73rd WTA title and first piece of silverware since the 2017 Australian Open when she was eight weeks pregnant.

Williams is attempting to win a 24th singles major in Melbourne, which would tie Australian Margaret Court’s long-standing record.

She said: “I have been playing for so long and been through so much and I’m happy to be doing something I love.

“I feel fortunate and blessed to be out here and to be healthy and to play.”

French coach Patrick Mouratoglou said: “More than anything I’m proud of Serena Williams for her hustle and fight.

“Thirty-eight years old, being a mother, 23 Majors, and still having that passion and dedication for the game is unique. This explains why Serena is Serena.”

Williams and retiring Dane Caroline Wozniacki were unable to win the women’s doubles in New Zealand, losing 6-4 6-4 to Americans Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend.

The former world No.1 donated her £32,300 prize money to the victims of the Australian bushfires.

Williams, 38, also signed the dress she wore in the first round and put it up for auction to raise funds.

She said afterwards: "I’ve been playing Australia for over 20 years, and it’s been so hard for me to see everything happening in Australia with all the fires and everything.
“People have lost their homes, and so much has happened.
“I decided for the beginning that for every game I play I’ll donate a dress, and I’ll also donate all my prize money - so thank you guys.”
