Six Nations 2017: Final table, full results and bonus points rules changes as England win championship – but fail in Grand Slam bid

ENGLAND retained the Six Nations trophy with one game remaining – but failed to secure the Grand Slam.

Eddie Jones’ side went down 13-9 to Ireland in their final match, ending their 18-match unbeaten run and their world record attempt.

How does the new trial bonus points system work?

  • A team winning a game shall be awarded FOUR match points
  • If the winning team score four tries or more in the process, FIVE match points
  • If a team loses a match, they shall be awarded NO match points
  • If a team loses a match by a margin of seven points or less, OR scores four tries, ONE match point
  • If a team loses a match by a margin of seven points or less, AND scores four tries, TWO match points
  • Teams that draw a match shall each be awarded two match points
  • In a draw, any teams who score four or more tries shall be awarded a further match point – so THREE match points
  • Grand Slam: A team that wins all five of its matches shall be awarded a further THREE match points
