Olympic champion Adam Peaty lowers own world record en route to European Championships gold
British swimming superstar becomes first person ever to swim 100m breaststroke in 57 seconds flat as he extends four-year unbeaten run in Glasgow
OLYMPIC champion Adam Peaty lowered his own world record on the way to defending his European 100 metres breaststroke title.
British breaststroke extraordinaire Peaty was untouchable in Glasgow, stopping the clock dead on 57.00 seconds to take gold.
That was 0.13sec quicker than his previous best time set when winning Olympic gold at Rio 2016 and continued his incredible near four-year unbeaten run over two lengths of the pool.
There was further success for Great Britain as teammate James Wilby took silver following a late surge.
Peaty, who famously was scared of water as a child, suffered a surprise defeat in the shorter 50m breaststroke at this April’s Commonwealth Games when he finished in second.
But there is no touching him across 100m with the 23-year-old Olympic champion having claimed two world and Commonwealth golds and now three European titles across the distance.

Peaty said: "I’m so humbled from the support.
"It's been a journey over the last few years and to end it in this pool is incredible.
"Sometimes you’ve got to have a bad race to realise how much you love the sport and how much it means to you.
"To end one-two shows we’re pushing and pushing and I cannot believe that.”
