Rio 2016 parade: Team GB Olympic and Paralympic record breakers cheered on by 150,000 people in Manchester rain
Tens of thousands flooded the streets as 400 athletes showed off their record-breaking collection of 67 medals from Games
OVER 150,000 people lined the streets in Manchester to celebrate Team GB’S Olympic and Paralympic success at Rio 2016.
Despite the rain, giant numbers flocked for the parade complete with flags, gold hats and mock medals.
Great Britain set a new record in Brazil by winning 67 medals, two more than the total at London 2012.
Team GB’S Paralympians also smashed their previous tally by 27 after bringing home 147 medals.
The parade started at the Museum of Science and Industry and ended in Albert Square, where over 400 athletes showed off their vast haul of awards on stage.
The likes of Jess Ennis-Hill, Jade Jones and Lutalo Muhammad soaked the atmosphere as Rebecca Ferguson and the Kaiser Chiefs performed.
But fans in London can still join in the party when the athletes turn up in Trafalgar Square tomorrow for a capital celebration.
Sue Murphy, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to host the national parade.
“The city has been a medal factory, pumping out golds as the home of British Cycling and British Taekwondo.”
