Rio Olympics 2016: Distressing scenes as Egyptian runner Fatma El Sharnouby faints after 800m heat in sweltering 32C conditions

The 18-year-old, who was competing in her first Games, was taken away on a stretcher by medics at the Olympic Stadium

EGYPT runner Fatma El Sharnouby was carried away on a stretcher after fainting following her 800m heat today.

El Sharnouby finished last in the race in the sweltering 32C conditions, and there was distressing scenes as she fainted and fell to the ground.

The 18-year-old was competing in her first Olympic Games, and crossed the line with a time of 2.21.24 before falling to the ground.

She was quickly treated by medics and the taken away from the track at the Olympic Stadium on a stretcher.

Temperatures in Rio are expected to hit 32C today, before falling to 24C tomorrow and then 28C on Friday.
