Rio Olympics 2016: Michael Phelps reveals his 28 Olympic medals weighs more than his three-month-old son Boomer

THE most successful Olympian ever Michael Phelps has revealed his medal collection weighs more than his own son.

Phelps, who has now called retirement on his swimming career, won his 28th medal - with 23 of them being gold - in the 4x100 metre medley relay on Sunday.

It has been a good year for Phelps who also had a newborn son, Boomer, three months ago.

And when asked what weighed more, his baby or his medals, Phelps revealed that his massive collection of medals were heavier.

Speaking to , he said: "The medals weigh more all together. Boomer's probably 16 or 17 pounds."

The arrival of Boomer was one of the reasons why Phelps decided to call time on his extraordinary career which spanned over 16 years.

He won his first ever gold medal in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and has since dominated the sport, breaking countless records along the way.

But despite his five golds and one silver in Rio, Phelps decided that he needed some family time with Boomer.

He said: "I want to be there every step of the way.

"I don't want to miss a thing. I've had so many people say to me, 'you blink an eye, it's over.'

"They grow up so fast. Next thing you know, they're going off to college. I don't want to miss anything."
