Rio Olympics 2016: Giles Scott claims gold with a race to spare to continue Brit Finn class domination
GILES SCOTT claimed his first-ever Olympic gold with a race to spare.
Team GB star Scott, 29, is guaranteed top spot in the men’s Finn class ahead of tomorrow’s medal race.
The 29-year-old from Cambridgeshire finished eighth and second in his two races yesterday and his 24-point lead cannot be overtaken.
It continues Team GB’s dominance of the event — they have won the Olympic title five times in a row.
Scott said: “Four years ago it was a pretty dark place but building on that disappointment we put a great campaign together and to win in the way I have is just amazing.
“We have amazing history with Iain Percy winning in 2000 and then Ben Ainslie winning, to be able to put my name alongside theirs is very special for me.
“I’m not sure my life will change forever but the Olympic Games has been such a huge part of my life. It’s been ten years of solid work to get here and I’m just really proud.
“It’s a funny thing to go into an Olympics and everyone is telling you it’s a sure thing. People around you assume that you are going to deliver but it’s not as simple as a lot of people think.”
Olympic sailing legend Ainslie added: “Huge congrats on winning Finn gold in serious style. Hats off to you my friend.”
