IT'S been called the image that will define the Rio Olympics.

Gymnasts Lee Eun-ju of South Korea and Hong Un-jong from neighbours the North posed for a selfie before they began competing in a show of unity between the two countries - still technically at war.

Relations between the two nations have been especially tense for months - but the image of the smiling gymnasts flashing the peace sign has been circulated around the globe.

Hong became North Korea's first gymnast to win a medal at the Olympics when she took home the gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

User took to social media to praise the pair, with the picture tweeted by political scientist Ian Bremmer getting over 21,000 retweeets.

Although some were concerned that Hong might face punishment on her return home to the sheltered nation.
