The 25-year-old missed out on London 2012 after an injury-plagued season and was desperate to make an impact on the Olympics.
And the Swindon-born swimmer produced when it mattered most to cruise to second place as American star Ledecky romped home in a world record 3min 54.46secs.
The silver came just minutes after Team GB teammate Adam Peaty had shattered his own world record to win gold in the 100m breaststroke.
