Formula E’s Andre Lotterer talks red carpets and tuxedos with Leonardo DiCaprio after being featured in actor’s new film

FORMULA E star Andre Lotterer has spoken of the 'honour' of being one of five subjects in Leonardo DiCaprio's new film about the sport, And We Go Green.

The Wolf Of Wall Street actor DiCaprio, 44,  has produced the flick about the environmentally-friendly motorsport, which had its premiere at the illustrious Cannes Film Festival this week.

Lotterer, 37, said: "It was very special, we aren’t used to this as race car drivers so it is a different part of fame.

"[The drivers] really enjoyed it and took in every moment – walking up the red carpet in tuxedos with Leo, taking all the pictures.

"I never thought this would happen but it’s an honour to be featured in that movie as one of the five drivers. The movie promotes the message of sustainability and green racing in cities that we can influence.

"And it shows how intense Formula E is."

Now the German driver's attentions switch to his home race - the Berlin ePrix this weekend - and surpassing his DS Techeetah team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne at the top of the Drivers' standings.

Last year's champ Vergne leads Lotterer by just one point, with four races including Berlin remaining this season.

And We Go Green had its world premiere in Cannes this week, with celebs such as Orlando Bloom, Dua Lipa, Brooklyn Beckham and model girlfriend Hana Cross in attendance.

Formula E Deputy CEO and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo added that DiCaprio was on board with the project from day one.

Longo said: “It was an idea of DiCaprio's.

“He came to Los Angeles during the second season [in 2015]. Sitting with Alejandro [Agag, Formula E CEO] he said: ‘We need to do a kind of documentary'.

“It then took us one year to process it internally.

“Leonardo was fully involved from the beginning, and it was his idea to hire Fisher Stevens as the producer and director of the documentary.

“And that has been great - the fact that he [Stevens] doesn’t know anything about motorsport and instead focuses on the drivers’ and Alejandro’s characters. He focuses on the people.”

Di Caprio was also in Cannes to promote Quentin Tarantino's new flick Once Upon A Time in Hollywood in which he stars with Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.

The film is set in the 1960s and follows DiCaprio as TV actor Rick Dalton and Pitt as his long-time friend and stunt double Cliff Booth.

After Berlin the Formula E season heads to Bern before wrapping up in New York with a double header in July.

The Formula E Berlin ePrix will be broadcast live on BBC Red Button from 12pm tomorrow, Saturday May 25.
