Brazilian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton wins after backmarker Esteban Ocon hits Max Verstappen

Ocon was attempting to un-lap himself in Sao Paulo when he struck Verstappen, with the Dutch star losing the lead

LEWIS HAMILTON toasted his title success with victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix, helping his Mercedes team to retain the constructors' championship.

It was Hamilton's tenth win of the season and the 72nd of his Formula One career meaning he is now just 19 shy of equalling Michael Schumacher's all-time record.

But the Brit was given a massive helping hand here in Brazil as he won a race for the first time having been crowned champion before the season was over.

He was beaten for pace by Red Bull's brilliant Max Verstappen, but the Dutchman was sent spinning after an awful mistake from Force India's Esteban Ocon.

Ocon, who is part of the Mercedes driver programme, was slapped with a ten-second penalty for causing the collision on lap 44.

But that was no comfort for Verstappen, who despite starting in fifth place and having a damaged car, came home in second place.

Hamilton's win means Mercedes retain the teams' title and earns each of their 900 staff a bonus of at least £10,000 each.

Hamilton, who was complaining of poor grip at the end, held on to take the chequered flag.

Astonishingly, he was now won 50 of the last 99 races.
