Byrd is known for trying to limit his contact with the boxers and thus is generally well regarded by fight fans.

The veteran has refereed many high-profile bouts, including Mayweather's 2013 victory over Robert Guerrero to retain a welterweight world title.

He was also due to take charge of Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Timothy Bradley, but withdrew because of an undisclosed illness.

Americans Burt Clements and Dave Moretti, and Italian Guido Cavalleri have been announced as judges.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously on Byrd's appointment during its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday.

A member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Byrd was a California Highway Patrol officer for more than 30 years.

His wife, Adalaide Byrd, is also a respected boxing referee who has also worked as a mixed-martial arts judge since 2006.

She refereed at the UFC 196 and 202 events, both in 2016.

McGregor fought in both events, avenging his defeat by  Nate Diaz in the first event when they met again in the second.
