Robert Byrd announced as referee for Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather mega-fight
ROBERT BYRD has been named as the referee for Conor McGregor's mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather on August 26 in Las Vegas.
One of the USA’s top boxing referees, Byrd will make the key calls when the Irish UFC star takes on the legendary American fighter at the T-Mobile Arena.
Byrd is known for trying to limit his contact with the boxers and thus is generally well regarded by fight fans.
The veteran has refereed many high-profile bouts, including Mayweather's 2013 victory over Robert Guerrero to retain a welterweight world title.
He was also due to take charge of Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Timothy Bradley, but withdrew because of an undisclosed illness.
Americans Burt Clements and Dave Moretti, and Italian Guido Cavalleri have been announced as judges.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission voted unanimously on Byrd's appointment during its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday.
A member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Byrd was a California Highway Patrol officer for more than 30 years.
