Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather: How much money would be at play and who would win?
FLOYD MAYWEATHER is close to announcing a multi-million dollar fight with Conor McGregor.
SunSport understands the boxing legend and the UFC champ have agreed a deal after months of intense negotiations.
This will be positive for fans around the world who are desperate for the two icons to get it on in the ring.
Mayweather has previously kept quiet about a potential fight after negotiations reportedly broke down last year.
Despite the recent news, the American did confirm negotiations took place last year, explaining they broke down because McGregor was demanding too much money.
But the richest fight in boxing history is closer to being made than ever before.
When would it be and how much money would be at stake?
McGregor’s agent Audie Attar has confirmed that his camp was “very interested” in setting up a match with the boxer.
If everything is agreed on both sides the history making bout could happen in 2017 which could be valued at a mind blowing £100m.
Where would a McGregor v Mayweather fight take place?
So far McGregor has only been granted a professional boxing licence in California, which makes Los Angeles the most likely location for a fight.
He applied for a licence in Nevada – which would make Las Vegas an option – but was initially refused due to an unpaid fine in the State.
However, McGregor reached a settlement in which he paid a £20,000 fine along with carrying out 25 hours of community service and is now free to apply for his licence.
Could Conor McGregor adapt from UFC to boxing?
The main issue like all of Mayweather's experienced boxing opponents is that they have never faced anyone like Money Mayweather.
While McGregor relies heavily on his boxing skills in the cage, those attributes will be nothing Mayweather has not encountered before.
The Irishman's stance is predictable and while his tactics have never let him down in the cage, he's never been asked to adapt his stance for an opponent, he simply blows them away.
But everyone knows Mayweather has arguably the best defence boxing has ever seen - ask Manny Pacquiao.
The clear differences between the sports are the methods of contact with opponent.
Boxing adheres to the Queensbury rules where you can only hit with the gloves.
In MMA you can strike you opponent with your hands and legs.
Plenty of fighters have made the switch between the sports but none with the iconic status Mayweather and McGregor enjoy.
What is Conor McGregor's record?
Notorious McGregor has won 21 of his 24 fights with 18 of the victories coming by knockout.
All three of McGregor's defeats have come by submission.
His last defeat was in March 2016 in UFC 196 to Nate Diaz with a rear naked choke submission.
What is Floyd Mayweather's record?
The 40-year-old, who is currently retired, made his pro debut in 1996.
He walked away from boxing with an unblemished record of 49 wins.
Who would win and what are the odds?
No odds are available on this bout as the match up has not yet been agreed.
We think Floyd Mayweather would win hands down - and the timing of the win would be entirely up to the Money man.
He could give the MMA expert a lesson in the art boxing for 12 painful rounds, or he could systematically break McGregor down and go for a stoppage.
Either way, it's extremely difficult to make a case for McGregor winning. How can he when no professional boxer could get near Mayweather?
What could stop Mayweather fighting Mcgregor?
The sheer magnitude of having two of the world's biggest sportstars going into battle means money isn't likely to be an issue - even £100million each.
That's because not only would the fight sell out, but it would be snapped up by millions worldwide. So TV companies, sponsors, UFC and boxing promoters would not be shy in coming forward with megabucks to make it happen.
However, one potential stumbling block could be McGregor's paternity leave.
The fighting Irishman confirmed his girlfriend is pregnant following his defeat of Eddie Alvarez, and UFC head Dana White believes he could take a year out.
White said: “His girl [Dee Devlin] gets super stressed out when he fights. He doesn’t want her having any of that stress while she’s pregnant.
“He’s good. He should take time off. He’s been fighting nonstop.
“Nothing wrong with him taking time off.
“It’s good for him and her, and it’s good for the baby.”
