WHILE Welsh middleweight Jack Marshman was the toast of his homeland after his superb TKO finish of Magnus Cedenblad at UFC Belfast, another big-hitting Welsh 185-pounder was sitting at home thinking about his own path to the UFC.
John Phillips goes by the fighting nickname of ‘The White Mike Tyson’ and the moniker is well deserved.
The big-punching former BAMMA middleweight champion has an impressive fight record, including his remarkable run of form that has seen him claim straight KO victories in each of his last four outings.
As an added kicker, his last three wins have all come inside the opening round.
And after seeing Marshman getting his shot on the big stage, Phillips wants his shot, too - and he’s calling out his fellow countryman for a Welshman versus Welshman clash.
"You’ve recently signed your first Welsh fighter,” said Phillips in a video message to the UFC.
“(The) First Welsh middleweight, in fact. Jack Marshman - round of applause, Jack.
"But come on, everyone knows I’M the best middleweight to come out of Wales.
"22-5. 22 finishes. 20 first-round knockouts. Who’s got a record like that? I’m a Welsh wrecking f*****g machine!”
Phillips then said that he wanted the opportunity to back up his claim of being Wales’ number-one middleweight, and called for a fight with Marshman at UFC Fight Night in London on March 18 next year.
"I watched Jack fight in Belfast versus Magnus. Come on. I’d blow the two of them out of the water. I’d hit them both into next week. Their heads would be up in the rafters - that’s a fact,” he continued.
"UFC, I’M the number one middleweight to come out of Wales.
"I’ve tried calling Jack out to be crowned number-one middleweight in Wales, and the fight has never happened - he’s been running scared.
"The UFC is coming to London in March. Let’s make the fight happen.
"I’m so confident of not just beating Jack, but stopping Jack, if I don’t stop him, don’t pay me. What have you got to lose?
"Massive Welsh fight - biggest Welsh MMA fight ever, I think. Let’s make this fight happen.
"Jack, I’ll see you there. Bring your f*****g A-game, because you’re gonna need it.”
