It came in the same month the pair of best friends-turned enemies headlined UFC 272 in Las Vegas together, where Covington won on points.

Former UFC title challenger turned pundit Sonnen - a friend of Covington's - opened up on the alleged attack.

He said: “Not good. Guys keep asking me how is Colby doing.

"I’m gonna be very light on details; this is not my story to tell. You want an answer? There’s your answer – Not good.”

Masvidal, 37, was later released on bond, which was set at $15,000 (£11,300).

According to MMA Fighting, if convicted of the current charges Masvidal could potentially face up to 15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

Criminal mischief can also result in jail time and/or fines too.

Covington had been out with popular YouTube group Nelk Boys, when the alleged incident occurred.

Police responded to a call and later stated in a report that the victim - now identified as Covington - told authorities he had left the restaurant when the alleged attacker ran up and punched him twice.

Covington is said to have suffered a fractured tooth and an abrasion on his wrist from the alleged assault.

He is believed to have identified Masvidal as his alleged attacker and claimed his rival shouted: “You shouldn’t have been talking about my kids” during the altercation, according to the arrest affidavit.

During the build up to their pay-per-view grudge match, Covington called Masvidal a 'deadbeat dad' on numerous occasions.

Breaking his silence online, Masvidal said in a video: “Call this the show your face challenge, what’s up, I’m from Dade county.

"You talk that s*** you’ve got to back it up. That’s how my city rolls.”
