Magna Grecia was given a lovely tow into the race by Shine So Bright (16-1), who set a strong gallop on the stands rail.

And once O'Brien shook the reins approaching the final furlong it was game over as the winner shot clear, with 66-1 rag King Of Change an excellent second. Skardu was third at 8-1.

The Irish 1000 Guineas and a trip to Royal Ascot for the St James's Palace Stakes now looks on the cards for the son of Invincible Spirit.

O'Brien said: "We are delighted with that, he has been a very solid horse.

"We knew last year that this would be the race he would start off in.

"John (Magnier) has been saying it to me all winter that he was going to be a miler, and that coming here and then to the Curragh and then on to Ascot would be the plan.

"At halfway it looked like there was more pace on the stands side. Donnacha gave him a lovely straightforward ride.

"When the rain came it was probably against Ten Sovereigns (fifth), he ran a great race and we'll probably drop him back to six furlongs."

O'Brien has won the Newmarket Classic with some true stars of the turf, including Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), Henrythenavigator (2008), Camelot (2012) and Churchill (2017).
