Weather latest: Is Sandown still going ahead? Deep freeze forces Musselburgh and Wetherby to abandon

The weekend forecast for Sandown's Contenders meeting looks promising, as does the Dublin Festival at Leopardstown

SANDOWN has beaten the snow and minus temperatures to go ahead today.

Musselburgh's big Cheltenham Trials meeting had been frozen off. The Scottish track made an early call to cancel their big fixture, due to be held Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday's racing also abandoned at Wetherby.

Plumpton and Leicester were forced to cancel due to frost on Wednesday, while Friday's Catterick fixture was called off on Thursday.

Chepstow also pulled stumps on their Friday card, while the cold snap has already had an impact on the weekend's action.

Musselburgh scrapped their weekend Cheltenham Trials fixture after a 12pm inspection on Thursday with the track frozen solid.

Sandown's Grade 1 Scilly Isles card is in danger, though the outlook is a lot more promising than it was last night. Wetherby's Towton meeting has been abandoned.

The outlook for the big Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown this weekend is more promising, though temperatures could dip to -3 today.

Musselburgh confirmed on Twitter that they are looking to reschedule their valuable fixture.

The tweet said: "The @bet365 Scottish Cheltenham Trials Weekend has been ABANDONED. Unfortunately, due to a frozen track & low temperatures this weekend’s Scottish Cheltenham Trials Racemeeting has been abandoned. We are looking to reschedule & more information will follow."

There will be some action for punters to enjoy on Friday, though, with the all-weather cards at Wolverhampton, Lingfield, Newcastle and Dundalk set to go ahead.
