Gosden's Ebor hero has reportedly settled in well ahead of the ’race that stops a nation’

EBOR hero Muntahaa is “thriving” ahead of next week’s £4million Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Thady Gosden – son of trainer John – has been overseeing the five-year-old’s preparation for the 2m Flemington thriller at nearby Werribee racetrack.

He revealed: “It took him a few days to settle in and get the measure of the place but he’s definitely enjoying himself now and he’s thriving.

“Why wouldn’t enjoy it? He goes out has a pick, has a roll – what more would you want?”

Muntahaa hasn’t run since his impressive victory in the Ebor at York more than two months ago.

Tuesday’s race will be his first try at 2m but Gosden is confident he has enough stamina for Australia’s greatest race.

He added: “The Ebor is over 1m6f and he’s won a Group 3 over 1m4f so he should have enough toe to get 2m around here.

“It’s not really a truly run 2m like we have at home. They go like hell to the bend and then pull it up.

“He should have enough tactical speed and then see the trip out well. He should definitely stay the trip.”

Jockey Jim Crowley can't wait to get the leg up on Muntahaa and said: “I can’t wait for the Melbourne Cup.

“It’s a race I’ve always wanted to ride in and to go there with a live one is good. Muntahaa has got better for racing - he was very good in the Ebor last time.

“I think the pace of the race will suit him. He’s a big, strong horse – if things fall right he’ll have a good shout.”
