Jockey Phillip Makin breaks bone in his neck after horror Redcar fall

The Northern-based rider came down aboard the ill-fated Eyecatcher in the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap

JOCKEY Phillip Makin suffered a broken bone in his neck after a horror fall at Redcar on Saturday.

The jockey was thrown from the saddle after Simon Crisford's Eyecatcher broke down inside the final furlong of the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap.

The pair held every chance of victory in the 1m6f contest before the incident, which left Makin initially unconscious.

Ambulances were quickly on the scene, and Makin had come round before being stretchered off the track.

Racing was delayed for several minutes while the jockey and horse received medical attention on the course.

Eyecatcher, who looked a likely winner when coming down, was sadly fatally injured.

Makin's partner Sammy Jo Bell tweeted: "Finally home after nine hours in A&E with Phil Makin, he is very sore and has a broken bone in his neck, but it's stable and in a brace for a few weeks to then be re assessed."

Makin is having his quietest season for a while, having ridden just 20 winners so far this term.

He rode 111 winners in 2009, has registered two Royal Ascot victories and enjoyed an excellent 2015, landing the Group 2 York Stakes and earning over £1,000,000 in prize money.
