Breton Rock tries to follow up last year’s win but he was 50-1 for a reason 12 months ago, partly because horses older than five have a poor record in the race.
We’ll overlook him and fellow veterans Suedois, Karar, Dutch Connection, Here Comes When and So Beloved this time around.
The most successful Lennox Stakes horses have already won at least one Group race so that’s a negative for the fancied Tip Two Win and Emmaus, who also has too few miles on the clock to take this.
We’re down to four — Sir Dancealot, D’bai, Spirit Of Valor and Donjuan Triumphant.
Breton Rock was the first shock winner of this for a long time so we’ll overlook the last named who is trading at around 25-1.
Looking at the final three, they are all distance winners who have already won a Group race and have had a relatively recent run.
Most Lennox victors have already experienced Goodwood so that’s a big negative for D’Bai who is racing on the unique course for the first time.
It’s not easy to split the final two but SIR DANCEALOT just gets the nod over Spirit Of Valor after his excellent run in the July Cup last time out.
That was over 6f and he finished strongly to suggest a return to this distance could pay dividends.
