MULLEN IT OVER

Today’s FREE horse racing tips: Newbury, Newmarket and Market Rasen – Steve Mullen’s betting preview for ITV’s racing

STRAT’S the way I like it at Newbury.

STRATUM looks hard to beat in the marathon handicap at 2.25 after his excellent effort at Royal Ascot.

2

He was having his first run on the Flat since leaving John Gosden in 2016 in the tough Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting. It was an excellent effort to finish third despite meeting some trouble in running.

He was held up a bit too far back as the pace hotted up and had to come wide around his rivals up the straight. Throw in the fact that he’s trained by the brilliant Willie Mullins and it adds up to a potent package.

The handicapper has been decent with a 2lb rise in the weights for that top effort and this race doesn’t have the same strength in depth.

Sir Chauvelin could be the one to beat going back over what looks and ideal trip. He finished a good third in the Northumberland Plate so won’t mind the hustle and bustle of this 2m test.

Buzz is another that could sting the bookies. There are few better at training stayers than Hughie Morrison and he’s bringing this four-year-old along nicely.

He beat Dash Of Spice at Kempton in May before he went on to win at Royal Ascot. The son of Derby winner Motivator proved that was no fluke when going in again on the all-weather last time.

He’s stepping up in distance here but should be all the better for it.

The Weatherbys Super Sprint (3.35 Newbury) is one of those races where no result would be a total shock.

GINGER NUT could take the biscuit after winning well at Windsor last time out. She didn’t have to pull out all the stops despite only having a neck in hand crossing the line.

That build on a good third at Lingfield on the turf in what was probably a stronger race. The Richard Hannon yard have had success in this race before and could collect again.

Another Richard — Fahey — has a stonking record with three wins in the past five runnings. That’s some record but he’s having a mini race of his own with no fewer than six entries.

Red Balloons is probably the pick on jockey bookings and she was a good winner at Nottingham last time.

There’s also a lot to like about Good Tyne Girl. She won nicely at Beverley before running well in a stronger race at Beverley last time when she finished strongly. She looks capable of improving on that.

HIGHGARDEN is having her sights lowered by John Gosden in the Listed Aphrodite Stakes (2.45 Newmarket).

She caught the eye when winning on debut at Newbury last season and started this campaign well with a rusty third at Sandown.

That was enough to see her upped in grade for the Musidora Stakes at York where she was a creditable fourth.

2

Connections then decided to pitch her into some hot company for the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. That proved to be a step too far and she was 10 lengths off the pace in sixth.

So this looks a wise move to drop into Listed level. It’s just her fifth start so there should be a lot more to come and this 1m4f trip should be fine on breeding.

Melodic Motion looked a shadow of her former self coming back from 10 months off at York last time. She could easily bounce back but it takes a slight leap of faith to back her today.

Alwaysandforever was beaten in a photo for Pontefract’s Listed Castle Stakes last time and she has more to offer in a first-time visor.

Dramatic Queen is another interesting one. William Haggas is stepping her up in trip after she failed to make all at Newbury last time. This is just her fourth run so she can build on that.
