ALPHA FEMALE

Alpha Centauri shows her class with Falmouth Stakes romp at Newmarket

Jessica Harrington's top-class filly was sent off the 4-9 favourite and has now won three Group 1 races in a row

CENTAURI once again proved herself the Alpha female with a dominant win in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

Alpha Centauri (4-9f) readily put away a classy field to win her third Group 1 in a row for Irish trainer Jessica Harrington.

She came from off the pace when landing the Irish 1000 Guineas and displayed an electric turn of foot to win the Coronation Stakes at Ascot.

The daughter of Mastercraftsman raced further forward this time in a share of the lead with Aidan O'Brien's Clemmie.

She was shaken up around two furlongs from home by Colm O'Donoghue and readily put daylight between herself and her rivals with a stunning burst of speed.

Roger Varian's 16-1 outsider Altyn Orda ran well to take second ahead of Clemmie (6-1), but Alpha Centauri was in a league of her own.

Harrington said: "She's absolutely unbelievable. She was just hacking along and quickened up.

"Maybe she didn't win as far as she did in Ascot, but she had to do the donkey work today and had to make all the running.

"She is amazing. For the size of her, she loves that ground. I'm very lucky to train her.

"She just has a very high cruising speed and that's what really helps her."

The filly is now likely to head to France for the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, with the Breeders' Cup Mile in November also a target for later in the year.

Harrington continued: "She'll probably go to Deauville next for the Prix Jacques le Marois.

"I know the Niarchos family (owners) love the Breeders' Cup, so that probably is on the cards."

O'Donoghue added: "She's a very special filly and I'm very lucky to ride her.

"I think she ran a very good race and I think there's still improvement in her. She's ice cold."
