Latrobe wins the Irish Derby as O’Brien family dominate
The Joseph O'Brien-trained winner was ridden to success by his brother Donnacha
JOSEPH O'Brien upstaged his dad Aidan when saddling Latrobe to win the Irish Derby at the Curragh.
The 14-1 shot came out on top in a thrilling race, with Aidan training the next four home in an O'Brien domination.
The colt was well-positioned in behind the front-running Rostropovich in the early stages, and the pair were stalked by even-money favourite Saxon Warrior.
Rostropovich still held a narrow advantage approaching the final furlong as the front three began to draw clear.
In a driving finish Latrobe stuck his neck out bravely for Donnacha O'Brien, who has now ridden three Classic winners this season.
He was a half a length ahead of 25-1 chance Rostropovich at the line, with Saxon Warrior never threatening to overhaul his rivals in a close third.

The O'Brien clean sweep was completed by Delano Roosevelt (12-1) and The Pentagon (16-1) in fourth and fifth.
Joseph O'Brien is making a habit of spoiling the party in big races for his dad, with his Rekindling beating Johannes Vermeer in the Melbourne Cup in November.
He said that he had always held the talented Latrobe in high regard.
O'Brien said: "I have to thank everyone in the yard, especially Joey Fallon who rides him out, and (owners) Lloyd and Nick Williams who have been so good to me.
"From day one we loved him and he never really let us down."
"Donnacha had a perfect position all the way, and committed him at the perfect time. The horse is tough and stays well."
The winning rider has enjoyed a brilliant season, landing the 2000 Guineas and Oaks before the Irish Derby.
He said: "It's pretty incredible and it's not really sinking in yet. It's a special moment.
