THE Irish Derby is a recovery mission for odds-on favourite Saxon Warrior, who heads to the race after disappointing in the English equivalent.

The contest is the third Irish Classic of the season, following on from the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas.

When is the 2018 Irish Derby?

The 2018 Irish Derby will take place on Saturday 30th June, at the end of this week.

The Dubai Duty Free-sponsored festival kicks off with the Rockingham Handicap and the Railway Stakes, before the main event later in the afternoon.

The race is due off at 5.15pm and will be shown live on At The Races.

How much money does the Irish Derby winner get and what type of race is it?

This year's Irish Derby has a prize fund of €855,000. It is a Group 1 Flat race run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs.

The race is open to three-year-old colts and fillies - although fillies are more likely to run in The Irish Oaks which takes place a couple of weeks later.

It is considered the most prestigious of the five Irish 'Classics' - the others being the 2000 Guineas, the 1000 Guineas, Irish Oaks and the Irish St. Leger.

Who won the race last year?

Capri surprised both Investec Derby winner Wings Of Eagles and the top class Cracksman to win in gritty fashion.

Who is favourite for the race this year?

Saxon Warrior, winner of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before flopping in the Investec Derby, is the odds-on favourite.
