Grand National tips: We help you find the winner of the Aintree marathon live on ITV1 using these trends

We narrow down the field to help you pick the winner of the big race live on ITV1 at 5.15pm this Saturday

5.15 AINTREE: Grand National

Stick with horses that are fit in the National — it’s no place to blow away the cobwebs.

A run within two months is a must.

So farewell Alpha Des Obeaux, Perfect Candidate, Carlingford Lough, Warriors Tale, Gas Line Boy, Pleasant Company, Ucello Conti, Raz De Maree, Virgilio, Buywise and Lord Windermere.

Oldies aren’t goodies in the National any more with horses aged eight to 11 holding sway. Saint Are, Maggio, Bless The Wings and Double Ross are too old, while Baie Des Iles is too young.

Although higher weights can win the National these days, Blaklion, Anibale Fly, The Last Samuri, Valseur Lido and Total Recall are too high in the official ratings to strike.

A couple of good runs coming into the race doesn’t go amiss, so we’ll cross out Tenor Nivernais, Tiger Roll, Chase The Spud, The Dutchman, Beeves, Pendra, Final Nudge and Road To Riches.

Seeyouatmidnight, Children’s List and I Just Know don’t have enough miles on the clock to win the Grand National.

You need to have won a chase over at least 3m so Captain Redbeard will just have to walk the plank.

So we have six left in Milansbar, Vicente, Shantou Flyer, Regal Encore, Vieux Lion Rouge and Houblon Des Obeaux.

Trends tip for the Grand National

5.15 Aintree -Regal Encore: 'Fits all the trends and was an eyecatcher last year'

You have a good mix of Aintree experience and staying power in that shortlist.

On balance, the nod goes to REGAL ENCORE.

He caught the eye in this race 12 months ago as he finished well. He may have just been running through tired horses but there will be plenty of those at Aintree this afternoon. His staying power will be a big asset.
