Horse racing tips: Carlisle, Chelmsford, Haydock, Kempton, and Musselburgh – Templegate’s betting preview for the racing this Saturday, March 31
Carlisle, Chelmsford, Haydock, Kempton and Musselburgh come under the spotlight as Templegate gives you his best bets for the day.
MUSSELBURGH

I’M expecting LUALIWA to make a return to prominent tactics pay off.
He was unusually held up on his first run for four months at Newcastle last month. That should have put him spot on for today and he’s well drawn to get a decent position.
His progressive form from last season gives him a great chance and soft ground doesn’t appear to bother Kevin Ryan’s hope.
Last year’s winner Twin Appeal is the big danger. He’s fit from the all-weather and is well weighted on his victory from 12 months ago.
Course winner Luis Vaz De Torres has become dangerously well handicapped. A promising effort over six furlongs on the all-weather on his return should have put the edge on him.
Set In Stone had a cracking time last season but all four of her wins came over further. Imperial Stone – making his debut for Mick Easterby having left George Scott - is another who has done all his winning over a mile.

KYLLANG ROCK looks ready to roll.
He won first time out last season and went within a neck of winning a Listed prize on soft ground at Haydock in June. The likely strong pace will help him and there’s a fair chance he’ll have improved over the winter after being gelded before his final race of last season.
Alpha Delphini ended last year in prime form. He scooted home over today’s course and distance on soft ground and he’s best in at the weights today. If he’s ready to go on his return he should go close.
Desert Law won this race first time out last season. He has form on soft ground but there’s little doubt he’s better on faster.
Caspian Prince is interesting on his first start for in-form Mick Appleby. He won at Newcastle in January but giving 10lbs away to the rest of the field won’t be easy.

AYUTTHAYA looks really well weighted in the Royal Mile.
He signed off last season with an all-the-way maiden win – when Book Of Dreams was back in fourth - on heavy ground at Chester.
That was a decent effort but it was his previous start at York that really catches the eye. He again made the running and was only mastered by 2000 Guineas hope Elarqam in the final furlong.
With conditions in his favour he must have a great chance.
Indomeneo is another who will like the ground. He won twice on easy going last autumn and it’s hard to imagine Richard Fahey won’t have him fit for his comeback.
One who won’t like all the rain is Ventura Knight. He’s also best when dominating and getting to the front won’t be easy from his wide draw.
Fake News returned with a nice Wolverhampton win three weeks ago. The extra furlong shouldn’t be a problem.
3.35
TIME TO STUDY should repay all the work on the form book.
He won the Edinburgh Cup over this track and trip last summer. That came on fast ground but he shouldn’t have a problem with today’s conditions.
American Gigolo has been a revelation on the all-weather recently. He’s rattled up a hat-trick of wins but there has to be a reason why jumps trainer Harry Fry has kept him away from hurdling. That has to be the wet winter so all the rain that’s fallen cannot help his chance.
Night Of Glory won over hurdles last month but he was hardly impressive. His Flat form hardly suggests he’s ahead of the handicapper and the widest draw won’t help.
Graceland is more interesting. Michael Bell’s mare is at her best when fresh as she showed when winning on her comeback run at Ascot last season.
She was generally consistent later in the summer and she handles testing ground.
I was tempted to chance top weight Clever Cookie. He was a class act in his pomp and showed last season he’s still capable of good form. This is probably his best distance and he’ll like the conditions.
The testing ground is the worry for last year’s winner Carbon Dating.

MAKE sure you Creep up on the bookies.
CREEP DESBOIS won at Fakenham in December and was mugged on the line by Colin’s Brother at Leicester when trying to follow up.
The ground was testing on those two starts and he’ll enjoy today’s slightly better ground.
Crievehill bolted up by 20 lengths at Sandown three weeks ago. He’s shot up 9lbs in the weights and I’m not convinced with the strength of the form.
Aloomomo was second but he’d run a couple of shocking races in his previous starts and third-placed Masterplan made a string of mistakes.
Amber Gambler is interesting but he probably needs a bit further but this trip will suit Twenty Eight Guns.

CHTI BALKO should make Hay.
He’s won both his previous starts over today’s course and distance. The second of those came when beating Sleepy Haven on testing ground in December and he drops in grade today after finishing in midfield in the Imperial Cup at Sandown three weeks ago.
Joke Dancer was way behind my fancy just before Christmas but he’s clicked into form since. There was a lot to like about his win at Newcastle last time and any more rain would be in his favour.
Wolfcatcher is well weighted on his best form and his Kempton third behind Kings Walk was a step in the right direction. Whether he wants to drop to 2m on soft ground is another matter.
Holryale hasn’t quite got it together over hurdles but the potential is certainly there. Super Sid another likely to come good at some stage but he’s got to put a shocking Chepstow effort on his handicap debut behind him.

GET Behind in the Staying Chase Final.
BEHIND TIME has always looked likely to make up into a useful chaser. Cheekpieces seemed to make a difference when he got his act together to win at Uttoxeter two weeks ago.
He’s unexposed over this sort of distance and trainer Harry Fry has been firing in the winners in recent weeks.
Shanroe In Milan battled on well to win at Doncaster in January. That was his first run in a handicap chase and he’s sure to win more races.
Horatio Hornblower couldn’t get past 14-year-old Pete The Feat at Sandown last time. I’m not sure he’s one to place too much trust in.
Private Malone ran one of his better races at Newbury last week but he doesn’t find winning easy.
