HAVE the last Word in the Glorious Stakes.

POET'S WORD was an impressive handicap winner over track and trip at this meeting 12 months ago. His neck second to Deauville - subsequently placed in two Group 1s - shows he's well up to this level.

The testing ground is a concern but if he handles it I'm confident he will win.

If he doesn't Lord Yeats might be the one to take advantage. Jedd O'Keeffe's hope bolted up by six lengths on soft ground at York in May.

He backed that up by seeing off Second Step in a Newmarket Listed contest and he will expose any flaws in the rest.

Frontiersman has the form to take this. He was runner-up to top-class Highland Reel in the Group 1 Coronation Cup at Epsom on Oaks day and he pushed smart Hawkbill close at Newmarket last time.

It was a little disappointing that he failed to get past his stablemate that day and softer ground won't help him.

THE Time is right.

Mud-loving MAKE TIME bolted up in a Salisbury maiden on soft ground last year.

Conditions were too quick for him behind top-class Barney Roy in the Greenham at Newbury in April and he was much happier on good going dropped into a Sandown handicap last month.

He came right away in the closing stages for a sixth-length win that day and this rise in class shouldn't be beyond him.

La Rav is progressing well. He easily won on his handicap debut at Newbury despite pulling hard in the early stages.

If he does that again on today's testing surface he is likely to blunt his finishing effort.

Bless Him looked good when slicing through the field to beat Ronald R in the Britannia at Royal Ascot. It's hard to say he's not up to this level.

Beat The Bank is another live threat. He arrives on the back a smooth Newmarket Listed success and there are reasons to expect him to handle the ground.

DIG out some treasure from a Chest in the Betfred Mile.

G K CHESTERTON has a great record on soft ground. He notched up handicap wins from the front at Newmarket and Epsom earlier in the season.

It's easy to forgive his modest Royal Hunt Cup effort on a quick surface when the race didn't pan out for him.

He's had cheekpieces on for his last two starts and swaps them for blinkers today.

Blair House ran a cracker - especially as it was his return to action - when runner-up to all-the-way winner Zhui Feng in the Royal Hunt Cup.

That was a funny race as they didn't go much of a pace and it's not hard to imagine Blair House improving on that form.

The excellent record of three-year-olds makes Masham Star interesting at a big price.

Gossiping cruised home over seven furlongs at this track in May. He's won over a mile and soft ground shouldn't be a problem.

His trainer Gary Moore has returned to form after a quiet spell and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him go well.

Withernsea and Sir Roderic are both at their best on testing ground.

MAKE the Qatar King George a PROFITABLE contest.

Clive Cox's ace was just about the best five-furlong sprinter last year. He sealed an early-season hat-trick with victory in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.

It was only freakish American filly Lady Aurelia that stopped him winning that prize a second time when the ground was faster than he cares for.

The recent heavy rain has done his chances the world of good.

Battaash looks a top-class sprinter. The way he blew away his rivals in a Sandown Group 3 last time was most impressive.

But there has to be a danger the slow ground will blunt his speed.

That's also the case for Take Cover. He's gunning for his third win in this race.

His neck defeat of Washington DC - with Marsha and Kachy further back - 12 months ago shows how quick he is.

But testing ground does not bring out the best in him.

Marsha and Priceless - and stablemate of Profitable - are others better on fast going.

I'M going to be Diplomatic about this nursery.

ROYAL DIPLOMAT has his first start in a handicap after showing promise on his first start for Richard Fahey.

He showed ability in Ireland before his fifth on soft ground at Ripon last month.

It didn't help sitting too close to a decent pace over five furlongs last time and I'm expecting an improved show if he's ridden more patiently over today's longer trip.

Carouse also switches to nurseries after turning well in novice races. There are certainly races to be won with him.

There's a case for saying dual soft-ground winner Holy Tiber is well weighted. She's obviously proven on today's ground and that cannot be underestimated.

Ascot nursery winner Rufus King has the best form - no doubt. But he's also got the weight to go with it. Giving more than a stone away all round on today's ground will not be easy.

SAINTED looks good in the Oak Tree Stakes.
She's only had four starts in three seasons but she's clearly at her best on soft ground.

Her easy York handicap success on her return to action last month suggests she's well worth a shot at this level.

Stall 15 might not be ideal normally but the the ground so testing it shouldn't be a problem - especially if the field comes to the stands' side in the straight.

John Gosden's Eternally is bred very similarly to Sainted. She was progressive in the autumn and she signed off last season by making all in an Ascot Listed contest.

This is a bit of an ask on her comeback run but I've no doubt she's up to this class.

German raider Wild Approach is interesting with conditions in her favour.

FOLLOW the Bear.

Mark Johnston's BEAR VALLEY won a seven-furlong nursery at this meeting last year.

He also ran well at today's track when runner-up in June and he was a little unlucky not to finish better than third in a red-hot handicap at Royal Ascot.

His two starts since have not been as good but I'm expecting him to bounce back to form. Most of his races have come on fast ground but his pedigree is all about softer conditions.

There's a fair chance he'll improve for the switch to today's going.

Stablemate Londinium thrived on the conditions when winning over course and distance on Wednesday. If he's in the same form he is sure to go well.

Swiftsure was impressive at Pontefract in June. He was well below that level six days later and that run could well have come too soon for him.

Debut winner Walton Street, course scorer Tuff Rock and Me Too Nagasaki are others worthy of respect.
