Day one of Glorious Goodwood comes under the spotlight as Templegate tries to find a host of winners at the Sussex track

IF anyone can, MURAD KHAN can.
Hugo Palmer’s ace rattled off a trio of wins last season ending with a head defeat of this season’s John Smith’s Cup hero Ballet Concerto. It was disappointing to see him run so poorly in a brace of Listed contests but those efforts were too bad to be true.
He was right back to his best when winning at Windsor over a mile on his first start since being gelded a month ago. The step up in trip should suit him and looks to have more to offer.
UAE Prince was just in front of Garcia when fourth in the John Smith’s Cup at York last time. He’s always promised to develop into a smart performer and he’s another who might well progress now he’s been gelded.
Khairaat’s winning run came to a crashing end in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot. But he was keen in the early stages and didn’t get the clearest of runs. It’s way too soon to be writing him off.
Tha’ir is interesting on his first run for Mick Appleby. He did well for Godolphin and it shouldn’t be a problem that he hasn’t run for 18 months.

SEA sure looks a good Vintage.
There was a lot to like about the way SEAHENGE beat some more experienced rivals on his debut at Naas. Considering Aidan O’Brien’s youngsters generally take a big step forward from their first runs, it was a cracking starting point.
O’Brien has won this race twice in the last three years – including with top-class Highland Reel – from his only two runners and I fancy him to it the target again.
Expert Eye also looked really smart on his debut at Newbury. The race has worked out well and he’s bred to be good.
Mildenberger won well on his first start and he was even better when following up at Newbury. It wouldn’t be a big surprise if he was somewhere near this level.
Zaman is the most experienced runner. He made little impression in the Coventry at Royal Ascot but ran better when fourth in a Newmarket Group 2. He lacks the potential of Seahenge and Expert Eye.

PUT in ACLAIM in the Qatar Lennox Stakes.
Martyn Meade’s hope was repeatedly stopped in his run when midfield behind The Tin Man in the six-furlong Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot. His only previous run this season came when well held on soft ground in the Group 1 Lockinge over a mile at Newbury on his return to action.
There’s little doubt today’s seven-furlong trip is his best. He’s won both his previous starts over the distance and he’s clearly up to this level having landed a Group 2 at Newmarket in October.
This is a tougher race but I reckon he’s up to the job especially from his good draw.
Limato could just be too good for them. He hit the frame in the Diamond Jubilee and only found super sprinter Harry Angel too good in the July Cup. The extra furlong is no bother to him but he would like the ground to be faster.
Librisa Breeze was a place further back on his belated comeback in the Diamond Jubilee. He’s probably better over seven furlongs but I’m not convinced this track is for him and his wide stall won’t help that matter.
Home Of The Brave is the other one I like. He’ll go well if getting into rhythm up front and last year’s winner Dutch Connection must have some sort of chance.

LIGHT the Wick for Goodwood Cup fireworks.
Big Orange is going for a third straight win in this stayers’ contest but I fancy WICKLOW BRAVE to upset Michael Bell’s star.
He only has three-and-a-half lengths to make up on Big Orange on his fourth in this race 12 months ago. Both the easier ground and likely strong pace are in his favour and his best hurdles run came when landing a Punchestown Grade 1 in the spring.
He beat Order Of St George in last season’s Irish St Leger and he was giving a stone to smart three-year-old Rekindling when narrowly denied at the Curragh last time. Today’s bigger field should suit him better.
There’s little doubt Big Orange has the best form. He bettered his two Goodwood Cup wins by landing Royal Ascot’s Gold Cup last time but there are reasons to take him on at such a short price.
He’s likely to be taken on for the lead and he is at his best on genuinely quick ground. If he runs to his Ascot form he will win but that’s not a given.
Improving Queen’s Vase winner Stradivarius and strong stayer High Jinx are others I expect to run well.

ALGAM should get off the mark in the maiden.
He made a promising debut when runner-up against more experienced rivals at Epsom a couple of weeks ago. The drop to six furlongs looks likely to suit him.
Tribal Quest probably has the best form. He met smart Invincible Army on his debut and he was nailed on the line over seven furlongs last time. It wouldn’t be a big surprise to see him make it third time lucky but the slower ground could throw a spanner in the works.
Oliver Reed and Rebel Streak are others who should be competitive.

STRIKE a Chord in this sprint handicap.
VIBRANT CHORDS was a bit unlucky behind El Astronaute on his return to action at Newmarket in April. He confirmed the impression that he’s improved this season by defeating A Momentofmadness over today’s course and distance in May. That’s the only two times he’s run over five furlongs.
His subsequent start over six furlongs when runner-up at this track was another good effort and I can’t see how a two-month break since will stop him.
Atletico is as consistent as they come. He looked some way ahead of the handicapper when bolting up at Windsor last week and a 6lbs penalty is unlikely to stop him running well.
Harry Hurricane, Pettochside and Love On The Rocks all have each-way claims.

GET up to some SHENANIGANS.
Roger Varian’s filly made a promising return in May and she raced too wide at Kempton the following month. Her head second to smart prospect Tribute Act was much more like it and she’s weighted to reverse the form.
Tribute Act must have a decent shout. But she likes to be held up in the rear and those tactics always require plenty of luck at this track.
Pretty Asset made no mistake on her debut at Newmarket. But she faces much more experienced rivals and a high draw won’t be much help.
The slower ground is the worry for Newmarket winner Ghadaayer and Hadeeqa wouldn’t want to miss the break like she did last time.
