THERE'S been a few famous Barneys. A friendly dinosaur, a Dutch darts player and a couple of million cats.

But – for me – the best Barney will always be Fred Flintstone’s thickie mate. Poor old Barney Rubble never learnt. He continually got roped into his best pal’s schemes – and usually ended up pedalling his rather hefty motor as well.

The Flintstones was essential after school viewing but Rubble has a rival for my affections today in the Eclipse.
That’s because I reckon BARNEY ROY (3.35) has a great chance of winning this annual first meeting of the three-year-olds and the older horses in this Sandown Group 1.

There’s not been much between the two generations in this race in recent years. The younger horses have won the last two Eclipses and Richard Hannon’s ace looks to have a great chance of making it a hat-trick.

Barney Roy has only been beaten once in four races. That was when runner-up to Churchill in the 2000 Guineas when the steady pace and a
crucial stumble did not help.

He came home very strongly when landing the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the step up to 1m2f for the first time should be the making of him.
His turn of pace should be too much for Derby runner-up Cliffs Of Moher and Eminent. Decorated Knight will love the fast ground. He heads the challenge of the older horses along with Ulysses.

They filled the places behind Highland Reel in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and both have claims.
Elsewhere on the card I fancy FUN MAC (4.10) and TIS MARVELLOUS (1.50).
Up at Haydock BIG COUNTRY (3.15) is the one to be on in the Old Newton Cup.

  • £3 win Big Country
  • £1.50 each-way treble Barney Roy, Big Country, Fun Mac

He’s improved at a rapid rate since joining Mick Appleby and just needs the rub of the green to have a top chance.
It’s a cracking afternoon of telly action with something for everyone. But – for once – Barney will be the star of the show.
