Martyn Meade putting together long-term Stewards Cup’ plan for Cartographer

The Newmarket trainer wants to see another win from Cartographer at the July Festival next week if she's to run in her end of month target at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

MARTYN MEADE will be looking for a good performance from Cartographer at Newmarket next week if she is to tackle the Qatar Stewards' Cup at Goodwood.

The three-year-old bounced back from defeat at Lingfield on her previous run to claim a comfortable handicap victory at Headquarters last Friday, earning a hike in the ratings.

Cartographer currently has 8st 3lb in the Goodwood feature on August 5, but Meade would want to see another good run before committing to Goodwood.

He said: "She has been put up 9lb so I think she will go for the three-year-old handicap on the first day of the July Festival.

"We didn't see the best of her on Friday as there wasn't much else there. Search me what happened at Lingfield, how did she get beaten there?

"The Newmarket race is an obvious step for her. If she wins that and does it well, then you could look at the Stewards' Cup.

"That would be a great target for her. I think we need to take these nice steps."

Projection finished third in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and heads the ante-post markets, despite being allotted 9st 6lb in the initial weights.

The four-year-old runs in the colours of the Royal Ascot Racing Club and he could be joined in the line-up by the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned Raucous, who was eighth in the Wokingham and has 9st 5lb.

Alex Smith, representing the two syndicates, said: "At Royal Ascot, they were both drawn on the wrong side but ran very well.

"Raucous got shuffled back which left him with a lot to do, while Projection was bang there and couldn't have done any more.

"If Projection had been drawn on the other side of the track, he must have gone very close."

Kevin Ryan's Growl, the Mick Easterby-trained Perfect Pasture and Duke Of Firenze from David Griffiths' yard currently head the weights on 9st 10lb.
