Royal Ascot 2017 – Permian wins the King Edward VII Stakes for trainer Mark Johnston
Permian was having his sixth run of the season but he bounced back from a below-par run in the Derby to put up a brilliant performance at Royal Ascot
PERMIAN toughed it out to win the King Edward VII Stakes.
Mark Johnston's colt had to bounce back from a disappointing run in the Derby but he did just that as he won the Group 2 contest.
Turning for home, Andrea Atzeni moved favourite Crystal Ocean wide of the field to make his challenge, but Permian under William Buick had nipped up the inside.
Khalidi also made late headway but Permian was not for passing. Khalidi ran on for second with Crystal Ocean third.
Buick said: "Mark gave me a lot of confidence in the sense that he just wanted his horse to go forward and get across without asking him too much.

"I know Mark and the team were surprised how badly he ran in the Derby, but I couldn't help as I had no explanation really, he certainly felt like a much better horse today.
"It was a good performance."
